Leaf peepers across the nation: charge up those camera batteries to capture fall foliage!
Certain signs of the shift to fall, like the gradual crispness in the air or the slow shortening of daylight hours, may be easy to miss. One distinct and tell-tale sign of the new season, though, is the brilliantly bright fall foliage! Whether stocking up on guide books, planning a road trip or charging camera batteries, leaf-peeping enthusiasts across the country are gearing up for another colorful season. If you’re considering embarking on a leaf-peeping trip this year, get to know the basics before embarking on your autumn adventure.
Why do leaves change color?
Each year, the changing fall foliage is a welcome sight across the United States. Over a period of weeks, bright greens shift to warm ambers and brilliant crimson. “Despite the popularity of fall foliage,” however, “the science behind the changing leaves isn’t widely known” (Smithsonian Magazine, 2019). In some leaves, chlorophyll, the green photosynthetic pigment found in plants and algae, breaks down to reveal the shades of yellow underneath. Red leaves, on the other hand, are tinted by the leaf’s production of a pigment called anthocyanin, prompted by the leaf’s life cycle coming to an end. So, while scientists do know how leaf colors change, they’re still not sure exactly why. This fall, take advantage of one of the most truly beautiful scientific mysteries out there!
When will leaves turn?
It’s hard to pinpoint when exactly shades of crimson and gold will take to the trees. Annual dates vary depending on sunlight, precipitation and temperature, so each geographical area has its own unique leaf-peeping prime.
This year, experts predict that peak dates will run from early October to early November, with each state enjoying a couple of colorful weeks. The Farmer’s Almanac (2020) offers a fall leaves guide for hopeful leaf peppers across the contiguous United States. Simply find your state, cross-reference the peak dates and begin planning a vibrant excursion!
What do I need for leaf peeping?
Leaf peeping supplies will depend heavily on your adventure plans. Some fall foliage enthusiasts like to lounge in the comfort of their backyard to admire, and maybe photograph, the changing colors closer to home. Others might pack a picnic and make a day trip out of it, while some of the most dedicated fans travel miles to get the most out of the season! Whatever you decide, a guidebook, camera, binoculars and warm layers could serve you well.
Whether camping out at home or driving cross-country, there’s a perfect leaf peeping adventure waiting for everyone. And, with peak season a little over a month away, there’s still plenty of time to plan your personal expedition! Take some notes in that guide book, grab the binoculars and make the most of this fall!
